Esme: Want to have dinner with us tonight and then weâll head to the bonfire together? Everyoneâs going and it just makes sense to carpool.
Crap. I forgot about the end-of-summer bonfire that was happening on the beach tonight. It was way past summer but my sisters and their friends tried to stretch bonfire season out as long as they could. They pretty much only quit when snow hit the forecast. I pulled the car over to the side of the road and texted her back, feeling not a small amount of guilt for lying to my own twin.
Me: Sorry, I have plans to check out a bakery in Blueball. Rain check?
Esme: Girl, where have you been lately? I feel like Iâve barely seen you the last few weeks. Can you try to make the bonfire after youâre done?
Me: Iâll try.
A rumble outside had me shoving the phone in my pocket. Daire was here, right where weâd arranged to meet.
âFunny meeting you here, assho.â
I stepped out of my car and watched the way Daireâs eyes filled with fire at the nickname. I had a feeling if I pushed him hard enough, he just might make good on that promise heâd dished out via text to spank me. I wasnât sure how I felt about sexual punishment, but with him, I was willing to give it a try. He may not be sure about himself, but I was sure enough for both of us. Daire Beneventi was a good man, through and through. Iâd trust him with my body and my life. And I was pretty sure Iâd trust him with my heart.
Weâd agreed to meet at a location outside of town where if anyone noticed my car on the side of the road, theyâd think I went on a hike on the nature trails that led to the beach below. I was tired of keeping our rendezvous a secret. Keeping something from my sisters had given me a devious thrill at first, but that had worn off quickly. Especially once I realized I had actual feelings for Daire.
Like love feelings. Ones that didnât come from just extraordinary dick.
âThat angel mouth is getting quite the workout lately.â Daire peered over my shoulder like he saw something.
I looked behind me but didnât see anything but my beat-up car. âWhat?â
I should have known from the smirk on his handsome face. âOh, just thought I saw a black feather floating behind you.â
At my frown, he cracked up. I didnât have the heart to be mad at him for insinuating that I wasnât an angel any longer. That laugh he was letting loose more and more these days did something to my knees. Wet noodles had more strength than these bad boys.
âAre we going on a date, or are we debating my angel status? By the way, did you call your mother this morning like you promised?â
That got him to shut up real quick. Even behind his aviator sunglasses, I could see that he rolled his eyes.
